What’s special about this job:

The Innovation and Science team supports the development of new products and our manufacturing operations across the globe.  This team provides prototype, formulation, process, and packaging development support, in addition to product sampling and testing, to help ensure proper development and adherence to finished product meet specifications.  As a Technician on the team, you will perform raw material assessments, formula evaluations, process testing, quantitative and qualitative chemical and physical analyses and tests required for all aspects of research and development. You will also provide input into the design and development of quality control parameters for our products.  You will utilize your creativity and judgement to evaluate experimental results and make recommendations to scientists based on your observations.

How you would contribute to the role: 

In this role, you will be working under the supervision of the Nutrition Product Development Labs Supervisor and receive informal direction from both scientists and engineers.  You will have responsibilities related to testing and evaluation, data analysis and record keeping, laboratory maintenance, and other duties as assigned.  Over time, as you develop your skills, you will train other team members on technical standards and operating procedures and will provide peer reviews and feedback to team members.  Focus and attention to detail are essential skills, as this team’s work can significantly impact internal operations for multiple development teams and outside relationships. You will prepare, organize, and document the activities associated with all lab work in an appropriate, organized and legible manner according to internal and current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) standards.  Specific responsibilities may include any or all of the following duties:   

Skills and background needs for this role: 

  • Effectively communicating technical data (both verbally and written) internally.
  • Food and beverage development experience (ie. powders, gummies, bars, snacks, etc.)
  • Conduct flavor/sensory evaluations, shelf-life studies, and analytical testing
  • Process scaled formulas, conducted quality tests, and prepared standard operating procedures within the product development laboratory
  • Ability to make modifications to a base formula for aesthetic and physical property improvements
  • Sensory skills (taste, smell, texture, etc.) to provide formulation suggestions and independently assess stability samples for acceptability
  • Experimental design thought process (efficient utilization of testing to minimize waste and time)
  • Provides bench and lab scale product formulation and/or design support by assisting in the batching and/or prototyping of new and existing products at the direction of scientist(s)/engineer(s).
  • Operates laboratory and pilot plant equipment according to established procedures.
  • Conducts experiments as scheduled and directed by scientist(s) and/or engineer(s).
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience with specific laboratory, pilot plant and/or testing equipment (as defined by the department).
  • Demonstrated use of basic statistical tools.
  • Basic computer skills to include an ability to learn and use job-related specific applications, software and databases including the use of typical office suite software packages.
  • Fluent in Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Processing, documenting and providing timely information with a high level of accuracy in a usable format
  • Ability to prioritize your work effectively and complete your work efficiently with a high level of quality.
  • Ability to learn and consistently utilize lab tools, techniques and safety principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and improve technical skills
  • Ensures proper design, set up, care and preventative maintenance of equipment.


Additional Qualifications: 

  • While not required, strongly desire a bachelor’s degree in a technical field (biology, chemistry, etc.) with food science or food technology preferred
  • Must be able to manage multiple priorities and make decisions.
  • Able to operate forklifts and pallet jacks
  • Ability to manage time efficiently and execute projects diligently
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills; be able to converse calmly and effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Prior experience with Genesis, JD Edwards, and LIMS systems desired
