What do we need:

We are looking for a Boiler Mechanic to be a member of our Facilities Maintenance Department, reporting to the Facilities Maintenance Group Leader. The Boiler Mechanic will be responsible for maintaining and repairing boiler systems and related equipment, including but not limited to boilers, pumps, motors, valves, heat exchangers, steam systems, water treatment equipment, and associated controls. This role includes performing preventive maintenance on all boiler-related equipment and ensuring the efficient operation of boiler systems.

 

What’s special about this role:

The Boiler Mechanic will primarily focus on maintaining and repairing boiler systems, including:

 

  •  Servicing boilers (steam and hot water), heat exchangers, pumps, motors, valves, and related controls, as well as monitoring and adjusting water treatment chemicals.
  • Conducting preventive maintenance and observing boiler operations to ensure efficient and safe functionality.
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting issues with boiler systems, performing necessary repairs, and readying boilers for annual inspections.
  • Inspecting boiler equipment for proper operation, replacing filters, lubricating, cleaning, and adjusting parts as needed; applying technical knowledge and test equipment to address system failures.
  • Responding promptly to system failures, notifying impacted customers, diagnosing issues, replacing damaged parts, testing systems, restoring service, and notifying customers of repair status.
  • Utilizing building automation and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) for accurate work orders, equipment history, and cost records.
  • Proposing efficiency improvements (system operation, energy usage) to management, staying updated on trends to reduce costs and enhance reliability.
  • Keeping boiler rooms clean, organized, and safe, completing paperwork accurately for materials used, and ensuring work orders are fully documented before closing.
  • Participating in emergency call-in service coverage for boiler-related issues and maintaining an understanding of boiler control systems.

 

Required qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or Technical School training with a minimum of 5 years of related work experience.
  • A Boiler Operator License or Stationary Engineer Certification.
  • State of Michigan Mechanical License
  • Experience in water treatment systems for open and closed-loop boiler systems.
  • Knowledge of building automation systems and the ability to troubleshoot and program related software.
  • The ability to read, understand, and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, and related documents.
  • Understanding of pneumatic and electrical controls related to boiler systems.

 

Skills to be successful in the role:

  • A working knowledge of steam and compressed air systems.
  • The ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication, organization, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility and openness to work in various locations and effectively under pressure.
  • Proficient with Fireye boiler control systems.
  • Understanding of steam and hot water boiler operations and boiler water chemistry.
  • Understanding of deaerator operation and control.
  • Ability to maintain and troubleshoot water softener systems.

Our Maintenance Department is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing the facilities equipment at our West Michigan locations for our valued customers. The Maintenance team is comprised of highly qualified Skilled Trades employees, and the equipment they maintain is involved with a wide range of facilities equipment and operations.

 

This position may be required to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime. This position will require employees to be available Monday through Saturday with the department determining which days will comprise the 40-hour work week based upon production and scheduling demands.
