Principal Database Administrator

 

Role Summary:

The Principal Database Administrator is the subject matter expert in Oracle, Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS), Microsoft SQL server and other database technologies. As an expert, this role defines long-term strategy for database systems and exercises considerable latitude and initiative to solve complex problems and ensures the company’s database systems are safe, secure, and cost effective.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Act as a subject matter expert and enterprise technology thought leader on database systems, including On-premises, Private Cloud and Public Cloud environment.
  • Provide database engineering leadership as well as generalized technical leadership for multiple product delivery teams within the Technology organization. Serves as the go-to database expert.
  • Define the long-term strategy for database systems and their implementation.
  • Enhance the scalability and performance of existing database architecture.
  • Make database administration tasks and processes easier through automation.
  • Influence operations and product delivery teams to ensure new capabilities are adopted and operationalized.
  • Closely partner with different groups within Technology organization as well as business units in order to clearly understand their requirements, implement technology solutions, and own the resulting systems.
  • Lead cross-function enterprise infrastructure projects related to database systems.
  • Research, develop, and communicate database system roadmaps, opportunities and constraints to Technology, as well as the company.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with Enterprise Platforms Engineering & Architecture, ensuring our forward-looking strategies and roadmaps align.
  • Provide direction, advice and make critical decisions for less senior database engineers.
  • Train and mentor team members.
  • Represent the team and manager at business and project meetings.
  • Participate in the team on-call rotation.

 

Required Knowledge & Skills and/or Related Experience:

  • Bachelor or master’s degree in computer science, information technology or equivalent with 10 years of experience in IT, with at least 7 years of professional experience with Oracle database and 2 years supporting Cloud-based database platforms (e.g. Amazon Aurora). Some experience with Microsoft SQL Server and/or MySQL will be an added advantage.
  • In-depth knowledge of the following:
    • Datacenter server operating systems Oracle Enterprise Manager, Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), Exadata, UNIX, Red Hat Linux, and Windows
    • Database platforms Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and MySQL
    • Cloud Database platforms including AWS and Azure
    • Database installation and maintenance, ETL, application queries, replication and backup/restore techniques/tools, audit, authentication, storage & capacity planning, security, performance monitoring, tuning & diagnostics, and troubleshooting.
  • Leveraging new technologies to improve process, reduce support, and/or lower costs.
  • Strong understanding of highly collaborative, iterative, adaptive styles of solution delivery and continuous improvement such as Agile and DevOps methodologies.
  • Possess and display expert skills in the following areas: technical troubleshooting, vendor management, customer service, communication, and project management.
  • Knowledge of network engineering concepts (e.g. advanced networking, switching, and routing) and backup will be an added advantage.
  • Ability to work with different time zones including the Americas and Europe.
  • Strong communicator and possess great interpersonal skills.
